Michael (Joey) Marella ’29
Michael (Joey) Marella

When you’re a student at St. Norbert College, the opportunities to explore your passions, both in and out of the classroom, are truly endless. For Michael (Joey) Marella ’29, that means studying sports medicine, playing viola in the SNC orchestra on scholarship, and playing infield for the Green Knights baseball team. We caught up with Marella to learn more about life as a multi‑talented student‑athlete.

How do you balance your academic workload with your involvement in music and athletics?

I use most of my free time studying, and I use baseball as a mental release from it. Playing in the orchestra has taught me discipline to practice how I play. If I am not giving my all, then it is not worth my time. I have applied this to my everyday life playing baseball and studying for my classes. I do everything on a tight schedule. No matter what, I have to do the thing that is on the schedule immediately or everything else won’t fit.

Explain your music scholarship and what it means to you?

I saw that they had a music scholarship available here and I have played viola since 4th grade so I applied and got it! I received the orchestral scholarship and it has really helped me stay involved in extracurricular activities. I enjoy the community the most. Since day one I was already really comfortable with all of the other players.

What is your major, what drew you to it, and what are your goals with it?

Sports Medicine. I have always liked to help people with athletics and health when they get hurt. I want to hopefully continue my life after baseball helping others.

What position do you play, and what do you enjoy most about being on the team?

I play utility but mostly third base right now. I enjoy the camaraderie the most because without a strong teammate connection there is no successful team. I have met my friends for life and I am excited to play with them this season.

What advice would you give to incoming students who want to be involved in multiple areas like you?

Learn the value of yourself. You deserve to be here. Don’t forget to prioritize your physical, mental and emotional health first above anything.
