PRESS RELEASE
St. Norbert College to host statewide equity and multicultural education conference

St. Norbert College will host the 29th annual Statewide Equity and

Multicultural Education Conference on "Empowering Student Leaders:

Embracing Diversity and Social Justice" on Thursday, Nov. 19, from 9 a.m.

to 4:30 p.m. in the F. K. Bemis International Center.

Bola Delano-Oriaran, assistant professor of education at St. Norbert College

and president-elect for the Wisconsin State Human Relations Association,

says, "This conference is an opportunity to learn and discuss some

institutional inequities within our society. Attendees will be able to transfer

the knowledge acquired to their day--to-day lives, school and work setting."

The conference primarily targets college and high school students, as well as

educators.

This year's keynote session will be led by Eddie Moore, Jr. director of

diversity at The Bush School in Seattle, Wash., and founder of the White

Privilege Conference. He will speak on "Diversity, Privilege, Oppression, and

Leadership: Are We Making Any Progress in the 21st Century?"

The Wisconsin State Human Relations Association exists to support and

promote the development of educational programs in the state of Wisconsin

that recognize and value human diversity. The association seeks to promote

the concept of cultural pluralism in our schools and in our society, and to

facilitate change in educational institutions in order to foster respect for the

rights of human beings, human dignity and the promotion of human equity.

The Wisconsin State Human Relations Association was established in 1981 by

educators in elementary, secondary and post secondary institutions. With

the assistance of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, the

association has promoted the concept of multicultural education through

conferences, workshops, a newsletter, and participation in state and national

forums on teacher education and cultural diversity.
