PRESS RELEASE
St. Norbert College to present "God's Communities and Their Artists"

St. Norbert College will present "God's Communities and Their Artists" as part of the "For

the Word of God is Living and Alive" art and music series. The lecture will take place on

Monday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. in the Fort Howard Theater, located in the Bemis

International Center on the St. Norbert College campus. The event is free and open to

the public.

The Rev. Andrew Ciferni, director of the Center for Norbertine Studies at St. Norbert, will

present the lecture, which was originally written for and delivered at a symposium on

Spirituality in Contemporary Art on October 18, 2011, (the Feast of St. Luke, patron of

artists) in Florence, Italy. Fr. Ciferni's presentation will propose that the acquisition of

art by religious communities is an expression of the charism of the religious community,

especially when the art is commissioned by the community and is in dialogue with the

artist.

Fr. Ciferni's examples will draw from a 12th century Norbertine Bible, a fresco attributed

to Fra. Angelico in the Dominican priory of San Marco in Florence, Italy, a work

commissioned by Daylesford Abbey in Paoli, Pa. and an illumination from the Collegeville

Bible.
