De Pere, Wis.: The Cassandra Voss Center at St. Norbert College will team up with the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay to host Heid E. Erdrich as part of

the center’s 2018-19 GREEN: Reimagine Environment project, which aims to explore environmental concerns by tapping into the knowledge, ideas and

experiences of the community. Erdrich will lead multiple events at SNC and UWGB during the week of Nov. 12. Discussion will center around stories about

native food using home-tested recipes, alongside stories from food researchers, tribal activists, families and chefs.

Erdrich is a poet, writer and filmmaker. She is Ojibwe enrolled at Turtle Mountain and is a faculty mentor for Augsburg College’s low-residency M.F.A. in

Minneapolis. As the author of five poetry books, Erdrich performs her pieces across the country, sometimes collaborating with musicians, visual artists and

dancers.

Specific event details are as follows:

Indigenous Luncheon: Tuesday, Nov. 13, from 11 a.m-1 p.m. at the Cloud Commons on UWGB’s campus. Erdrich’s dishes will be showcased within the

common’s “all-you-can-eat” lunch. Entrance fees are $6.75 + tax per person.

Explore Indigenous Cuisine: Food Demonstration & Discussion: Wednesday, Nov. 14, from 1-2 p.m. in the Christie Theatre of the University Union on UWGB’s

campus. Chef Corey Arndt and Erdrich will work together to teach attendees how to cook in indigenous ways. Free and open to the public.

Indigenous Poetry & Poet Discussion: Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 5 p.m. in the Christie Theatre of the University Union on UWGB’s campus. Free and open to

the public.

“Curator of Ephemera:” A Night of Poetry: Thursday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. in the Cassandra Voss Center on SNC’s campus. Erdrich will showcase poems that

recognize how the love of technology and extraction industries on indigenous lands obscure the realities of indigenous peoples. The event will feature a live

poetry reading of “Curator of Ephemera,” a collaborative collection of poems by Erdrich that highlight lessons in Anishinaabemowin and more. Free and open

to the public.

Indigenous Innovation: Returning to and Revising Indigenous Ways and Recipes: Friday, Nov. 16, at 3:30 p.m. in Fort Howard Theater of the F. K. Bemis

International Center on SNC’s campus. Erdrich will discuss her book “Original Local,” which explores how indigenous peoples use cultural heritage and stories

to pass on knowledge about the Midwest and its bountiful resources. Free and open to the public.

The Cassandra Voss Center, built in 2013 to honor the life of St. Norbert College student Cassandra J. Voss, seeks to promote and facilitate critical

conversations and create spaces in which genuine dialogue can thrive.
