This course surveys select topics in the social, economic and political history of Africa. We will explore the great medieval West African kingdoms and empires, trans-Saharan and Indian Ocean trading networks, the importance of Africa's resources, including gold, to the medieval world economy, and the involvement of Africans in Atlantic trade.
