University of Wisconsin Sea Grant College Program to Fund Faculty Biology Research Project at St. Norbert College

The University of Wisconsin Sea Grant College Program recently announced it will provide more than $5.8 million for Great Lakes research, education and outreach over the next two years. The omnibus grant will fund a research project at St. Norbert College, as well as four projects involving the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

David Hunnicutt, associate professor of biology at St. Norbert College, will work with two University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee scientists to develop a vaccine to protect fish from the pathogen Flavobacterium columnare. Those in the aquaculture industry can suffer devastating losses due to this fish pathogen.

The entire two-year grant will support 15 research projects that explore the freshwater seas, along with three educational and 32 outreach efforts. In addition to the Green Bay/De Pere-based work, scientists on the Madison, Milwaukee, Stevens Point and Superior campuses of the University of Wisconsin System will receive funding.

Headquartered at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Wisconsin Sea Grant is a statewide program of basic and applied research, education, outreach and technology transfer dedicated to the stewardship of the nation’s Great Lakes and ocean resources. The program is part of a national network funded through the National Sea Grant College Program, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the U.S. Department of Commerce, and through matching contributions from participating states and the private sector.
