With support from IDEAS (Increase and Diversify Education Abroad for U.S. Students), SNC will expand and diversify its study abroad opportunities through a new partnership with Mexico’s Universidad Panamericana (UP). The proposed Getting Down to Business program will offer a two-week immersive experience during SNC’s January “J-Term,” which offers students a compressed course of study in between the Fall and Spring semesters.

The program will partially fulfill the requirements of the required Senior Seminar capstone course for International Business and Language Area Studies majors. Getting Down to Business will center on economic development and business issues related to U.S.-Mexico relations and will include formal classes; instructional readings; briefings from local business organizations, senior leaders of companies, and government officials; and site visits to business settings. The capstone experience of the term will be an international business case competition, during which teams of students will develop solutions and give presentations related to a business case study.

This new program will fill a critical gap in SNC’s current study abroad programming, which currently lacks a strong partnership with Mexico targeted toward its business and Spanish majors.

Through the three year Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) grant, awarded to SNC from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Violence Against Women in October 2019, the college is working to facilitate campus-wide cultural change toward the elimination of gender-based violence. The grant is an important opportunity for SNC to bring resources, support and services to the campus community to help survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking.

Here are some highlights from VAWA grant:

• Creation of "Core Team" and four disciplines including Student Conduct, Survivor Services, Law Enforcement/Campus Safety, Prevention.
• Creation of four "Trauma-Informed Safe Spaces" on campus and within the De Pere community in the four main places SNC students may disclose gender-based violence. These spaces are located within the Alumni House (garden level Survivor Safe Space), Title IX office (Garden Level of Main Hall), Campus Safety (1st floor PAC), and within the De Pere Police Department.
• Coordination and implementation of multiple student-led awareness month events on campus for Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and Dating Violence Awareness Month (increasing activities by 250% from prior years).
• Review and revise campus policy and procedures, and redesigned student facing information to include department websites and mirror clings in all campus bathrooms of confidential/reporting resources.
• Coordinated with community partners (Golden House and Sexual Assault Center) to have a consistent campus presences and to host weekly Survivor Support Groups
• Trained 15 SNC employees on evidenced-based restorative justice practices
• Supported the creation and implementation of LGBTQ+ training for all law enforcement
• Created and launched the Peer Advocate program in collaboration with the Sexual Assault Center
