Cassandra Voss Center bell hooks Residency

A singular honor for St. Norbert College, social justice scholar bell hooks returns for a residency April 18-22, 2016. She will be in dialogue with noted activists, scholars and artists. hooks will also have several conversations about her work, which includes a catalog of more than 40 books. She returns for a third time to St. Norbert where the Cassandra Voss Center serves as a sister-center to her own bell hooks Institute at Berea College in Kentucky. Co-sponsored by Humana and Killeen Chair of Theology & Philosophy. Featuring private campus & classroom events, plus the following public events, which are FREE & PUBLIC, no tickets required (early arrival recommended).

About bell hooks

bell hooks (née Gloria Watkins). Honored as a leading public intellectual by The Atlantic Monthly, as well as one of Utne Reader’s “100 Visionaries Who Could Change Your Life,” hooks is a captivating speaker and canonical social justice scholar who has authored nearly 40 books, including five books for children. bell hooks began her first book, “Ain’t I a Woman: Black Women and Feminism” (1981), when she was 19; it was named one of the “20 most influential women’s books of the last 20 years” by Publishers Weekly. hooks’ creative, interdisciplinary scholarship has impacted multiple disciplines and her works are held as canon in courses internationally, from sociology to religious studies to media communication. hooks is currently the Distinguished Professor in Residence in Appalachian studies at Berea College. “Each offering from bell hooks is a major event,” says Dr. Maya Angelou. Founder and senior partner of the Center for Courage & Renewal, Palmer is a world-renowned writer, speaker and activist who focuses on issues in education, community, leadership, spirituality and social change. He has reached millions worldwide through his nine books, including “Let Your Life Speak,” “The Courage to Teach,” “A Hidden Wholeness” and “Healing the Heart of Democracy.” Palmer spoke at St. Norbert in 1990 and is making a special return appearance.

Palmer holds a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of California at Berkeley, as well as 11 honorary doctorates, two Distinguished Achievement Awards from the National Educational Press Association, and an Award of Excellence from the Associated Church Press. In 2010, Palmer was given the William Rainey Harper Award whose previous recipients include Margaret Mead, Elie Wiesel and Paolo Freire. In 2011, he was named an Utne Reader Visionary, one of “25 people who are changing your world.”

His latest book, “Healing the Heart of Democracy: The Courage to Create a Politics Worthy of the Human Spirit,” was chosen by Spirituality & Practice as one of the best books of 2011 on contemplation and social activism. In 1998, the Leadership Project, a national survey of 10,000 educators, named Dr. Palmer one of the 30 “most influential senior leaders” in higher education and one of the 10 key “agenda-setters” of the past decade. >>Learn More!

Hari Kondabolu is a Brooklyn-based, Queens-raised comic who the NY Times has called “one of the most exciting political comics in stand-up today.” He has been featured on David Letterman, Conan, John Oliver, Jimmy Kimmel and NPR’s Terry Gross.

Kondabolu has been featured at HBO Comedy Festival, South by Southwest, Sasquatch, the Aspen Ideas Festival, and Just for Laughs in Montreal and Chicago. Kondabolu was New York University APA Institute’s Artist in Residence for the 2014-15 academic year. He earned his B.A. in comparative politics from Bowdoin College, and his master’s in human rights from the London School of Economics. He’s a lifelong fan of bell hooks. >>Learn More!
