The dialogue “Ending Violence: How We Change” between bell hooks and Dr. Beth Richie will take place on Wednesday, April 22, 2015, at 4:30 p.m., in the Ft. Howard Theater on the St. Norbert College campus.

About Beth Richie
Dr. Beth Richie is Professor of African American Studies, Gender & Women's Studies, Criminology, Law, & Justice, and Sociology at the University of Illinois at Chicago University of Illinois at Chicago. She is 1 of 5 senior advisors to the National Football League's policy group addressing domestic violence and sexual assault. Additionally, Dr. Richie directs Chicago's well-known Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy. Her book, Compelled to Crime: the Gender Entrapment of Black Battered Women (1995), is used widely in college courses nationally, as is her 2012 book Black Women, Male Violence and the Build-up of a Prison Nation.
In addition to her impressive leadership positions, Dr. Richie heads a multi-million dollar research project sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, examining youth and women's issues at Rikers Island Correctional Facility in New York. She also undertakes multiple research projects investigating violence against women in low-income African American communities and researches rates of arrest, release, and relapse for incarcerated women and young people, including prison conditions once sentenced.
Because of her profound work, Dr. Richie has earned several honors: National Advocacy Award by the Department of Health & Human Services, Office of Violence Prevention; the Audre Lorde Legacy Award of the Union Institute stemming from her work with the National Network for Women in Prison; and the Visionary Award Of the Violence Intervention Project.
