Humans of St. Norbert:

“This summer I worked at Bellin Health Titletown Sports Medicine & Orthopedics. They bring people in who want corrections on their running form, be it from a previous injury or they just want to get a little faster or something like that. During my sophomore year of college, I pulled my hamstring and that’s where I went for some advice and some help. That’s kind of where the idea [for getting the internship] started because I wanted to see the other side of that and be helping other kids that have pulled their hamstrings.

“I mainly worked with Nate Vandervest who is their running specialist. We’d bring people in, do a bunch of tests, put them on a fancy treadmill, run through some diagnostic stuff with them, and then show them, through videos that we took of them running, what they are doing wrong and what they are doing right. We’d then give them exercises to help them get faster, exercises to help them prevent injury and exercises to help them recover from an injury. On top of helping with that, I was in charge of developing a sprint assessment and program. The running assessment that they have there right now is mainly just for distance runners and they want to get more into the sprinting side of things. As a sprinter myself, they were using me to develop that side of their program.

“It was definitely a separate interest outside of [my major] at first and then as I was doing the internship it kind of bled into one another. So I could start to see where physics was helping supplement the athletic part of the stuff that I was doing and how the athletics stuff was bleeding into the physics side.” – Nic Greenlaw ’21
