Humans of St. Norbert: Jaxsen ’22 and Max Schermacher ’20

Humans of St. Norbert:

Max: “At the indoor conference meet last year, I set the school pole vaulting record at 14 feet, 7 inches. Then, he broke it down in Alabama during the Gulf Shores meet. He broke my outdoor record at 15 feet, 5 inches. Then, he also set the outdoor record at 15 feet, 1 inch, last year.”

Jaxsen: “I remember when I first started, I was sort of aspiring to get to Max’s level. There was this one meet where I had just cleared 11 feet, and then Max was at 11 feet, 6 inches, so we were both at the 11-6 height. It was the first time that had ever happened and it was new for me. Then he left to come up to St. Norbert, and I kept working down in Plymouth. The first meet I vaulted higher than Max was kind of bittersweet. I was happy at my height, but I was also kind of worried. But he’s shown me that there is nothing to be worried about. There's no one I’d rather have pushing me along here. As competitive as we are, we also support each other just as much. I couldn’t do nearly as well as I have been doing without him coaching me. Yeah, we are competitive with each other because we’re brothers, but I think we do a pretty good job of managing it in a way that's going to make both of us better.”

Max: “People always ask me, ’How do you feel that your brother is better than you?’ My legit answer is that I don’t care that he’s beating me. I think that it’s super awesome. If anyone was going to do it, I’m glad that it was him.”
