Humans of St. Norbert:
“Zambia Project is an organization on campus that raises funds throughout the year and then sends all of those funds to an organization in Zambia, a country in southeastern Africa, called ZOCS, which stands for ‘Zambian open community schools.’ Those schools are typically built in rural areas and are made for students who might not otherwise have an education. We’re talking elementary, middle school and pre-school, because public education in Zambia isn’t actually free. People have to buy books. They have to pay for uniforms. Then there are other stipends that have to go to the school for tests to move onto the next level or grade. So with 60 percent of the population under the poverty line, there’s no way families can afford that. Then, with the AIDS epidemic, there are basically entire generations wiped out. So you have kids being cared for by grandparents who can’t work or can’t make the amount of money that is needed to go to these schools. That’s where ZOCS steps in. They build the schools and bring in volunteer teachers who are given a stipend and that's where a lot of our [the Zambia Project] funding goes.”
