Humans of St. Norbert:

“I always tell people that I was never good enough to play sports in college, so I’ll just write about sports. My proudest moment had to be my first by-line. I had a job for the Press-Gazette last year. I was pretty much a high school sports clerk. I worked almost every night, sometimes in the office, sometimes at home, just rounding up high school sports and covering some games. One night, they needed someone to cover a UWGB Basketball game. So I went there – had the press badge and everything, and got to sit near the sidelines to cover the game. I even got to interview the coach after. I remember I had to get the article in an hour after the game ended, so I was writing it mid-game and then I got to my car, turned on a hot spot on my phone just to email it to them, and then it went online.

“Working for a real news company, and getting tips and tricks from other sports reporters was a great experience. It was cool to write for something that people read. I learned so much about professional writing.

“People don’t know the time it takes to do everything in journalism. My co-editor and I will be in the office editing the paper [St. Norbert Times] for hours on Sundays. But then there’s the time it takes to go get the story and the time it takes to accurately represent what the story is for the people reading it. I think people might not see the creativity that goes into journalism. Stories in general have the opportunity to be super creative and insightful. I think that creativity in journalism is sometimes lacking in my opinion. There's so many stories.”
