Parking at SNC
St. Norbert College has always provided parking for students on campus. Currently there are close to 900 parking spaces designated just for student parking. With the main core of campus being only 2 blocks wide by 3 blocks long, parking even in the most-distant lot is just a quick walk to the center of campus.
Students with vehicles are required to register and purchase a parking permit annually. Permits range in cost from $10 for a two-week temporary permit up to $100/per year for a residential parking permit. Every student who brings a car to campus is expected to register it, display a valid permit on it, and park the car in the appropriate lot for the car’s permit type.
Students are expected to walk to their on-campus jobs, the cafeteria, the library, old St. Joe’s Church, the campus center, etc., and to obey all traffic control devices. They have the right-of-way at marked crosswalks, in intersections and on sidewalks extending across a service drive, building entrance or driveway. Students who have jobs, internships and class requirements (student teachers) away from campus are the exceptions, as they require transportation to get them to and from these responsibilities.
While having a car on campus may seem convenient, many students who bring a car to campus find that it remains parked most of the time. Having a car on campus during winter means that students will often have to dig the car out of snow before they can use it. We encourage all students to make sure that they and their cars are equipped with winter tools, which means having shovels and ice scrapers for their cars and a warm pair of gloves, hats and boots for themselves.
Parking bulletins (to include lot closures and snowplowing notices) are made via SNC News and/or broadcast e-mails sent directly to the student’s SNC e-mail account. Students are responsible for monitoring their SNC e-mail for all parking messages.
Since the parking office is part of campus safety (which has officers on duty 24/7/365), student questions and issues can be addressed at any time of the day or night.
Several of the campus lots, including the two along 4th Street, have blue phones at their entrances. The blue phones connect the caller directly with the campus safety office and can be used to request an escort, to get a jump start for a dead battery, or to report a suspicious situation.
The campus parking lots and streets are monitored throughout the day and night, and any vehicles that are parked in violation of state or campus parking policy are ticketed. Individuals who receive a citation can appeal the ticket to the parking office by providing a written explanation that includes the date, time and ticket number within 10 days of the date the ticket was issued.
The streets bordering the college are monitored and enforced by the De Pere police department. All De Pere city streets and the streets within the college campus are signed as “no overnight parking” (no parking 2-5 a.m.) streets and several of the city streets are posted as 2-hour parking during the day.
Students certainly do not need a car to get around the campus and walking is still the easiest way to access campus and the surrounding areas – no permit required!
