Major Decisions?
Approximately 20% of the SNC 2016 class is formally undeclared in their major. Even more students will change their major throughout their time at SNC. Whether your student is undecided or just uncertain, Career Services has free resources and assessments available to help them find their way. Those include assessment tests, interest inventories, a career mentoring program aided by alumni and friends of the college, and a helpful tool for linking majors to careers called “What Can I Do With a Major In…?”
Here are some things you should know as a parent:
• It’s OK to be undecided! Students have until the end of their sophomore year to declare a major. Choosing a major can be a difficult decision and it takes time.
• You can help support your student’s decision-making process by asking these questions:
- What majors are you considering? Why?
- What is your favorite subject? Why?
- What activities do you like outside of class?
- What do you see as your greatest strengths/weaknesses?
- What steps have you taken to work on selecting your major?
- How can I help?
• You should encourage your student to take advantage of available resources. In addition to Career Services, students can talk with advisors, faculty, staff and upper-class students about majors they are considering, or take a general studies course in an area in which they are interested.
• This process takes time; the earlier your student begins exploring majors, the better!
