The Value of Two-Credit Classes

St. Norbert College offers a variety of two-credit courses; some are for specific degree requirements, while others are elective-based. As advisement days approach, we answer some common questions about these courses.

Which disciplines offer two-credit courses?

  • Theatre studies offers courses for performance and production, and music offers courses for ensembles, choirs, group instruments and voice lessons. Students participate in the creative process during these courses, so they are recommended for those who are musically and artistically inclined.

  • Physical education courses include weightlifting, ice skating, curling and bowling.

  • Business and political science both offer two-credit courses for which students do not need a prerequisite at the 200 level but do need to have sophomore standing.

  • Accounting also offers two-credit courses, but they are upper-level courses and have prerequisites.

How can two-credit courses benefit students?

Two-credit courses allow students to take both introductory and advanced-level courses, says Yi-Lan Niu (Music). For example, the music department offers guitar, piano and voice classes for students who “have very little to no background in singing or playing instruments,” Niu says. “These classes give students the opportunity to learn and gain a basic ability and fundamental knowledge in music while not being stressed out about a heavy workload.”

How do two-credit courses impact financial aid and course schedules?

“Two-credit courses fit in your schedule without taking additional financial aid because financial aid is between 12 to 18 credits,” says Meghan Walsh (Academic Advising & Career Development). “Also, during J-term, St. Norbert College offers short-term study abroad if you cannot afford it or do not have room in your schedule during the semester. They help make the most of being at a liberal arts college.”

How do students find a list of two-credit courses offered by the college?

The college’s course catalog provides in-depth descriptions and the number of credits for every course offered during the year. KnightLine also offers a full list of two-credit courses for the following semester when using the advanced search function. Students also can contact their advisors or email the registrar at registrar@snc.edu.
