The Rev. Bryan N. Massingale to speak at St. Norbert College
The Rev. Bryan N. Massingale will present "With Liberty and Justice for Some? Race, Poverty, and Catholic Social Thought" on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m. in the Fort Howard Theater in St. Norbert College's Bemis International Center. The event is free and open to the public, with a book signing and reception to follow the presentation.
Fr. Massingale, a priest in the diocese of Milwaukee, received his doctorate in moral theology from the Academia Alphonsianum in Rome and specializes in social ethics. He is a professor of theological ethics at Marquette University and teaches at the Institute for Black Catholic Studies at Xavier University of Louisiana. Massingale recently served as president of the Catholic Theological Society of America and is currently past convenor of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium. His award-winning book, Racial Justice and the Catholic Church, is a theological analysis of racism in the United States, the U.S. Catholic church, and the wider Catholic tradition. Utilizing the resources of black Catholic theology, Massingale calls for a more adequate Catholic engagement with racism and racial reconciliation.
Fr. Massingale's lecture is part of a set of programs at St. Norbert College exploring the theme of race, society and the church, an initiative of the St. Norbert College religious studies discipline with support from Mission and Ministry, The Peace and Justice Center, Multicultural Student Services and Norbertines.
