National Geographic Map of Africa at St. Norbert College
On Friday, Feb. 9 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Sensenbrenner Memorial Union Lounge, the National Geographic Africa Map will be visiting St. Norbert College. Admission is free and open to the public.
This is the largest known map of Africa. The map is designed as a giant game board in order to make geography a hands on experience. Its brightly-colored, smooth, vinyl surface accurately illustrates and labels the continent, oceans, seas, rivers, mountains, countries and capitals. Educators, students and visitors are able to take adventures across the African continent, including safaris, scavenger hunts and competitive games. Interactive activities accompany the map, which include atlases, books, videos, music and game materials.
The map is 35 feet long and 26 feet wide. It weighs 102 pounds and travels in a custom-made hard plastic shipping cylinder. The map was created by the National Geographic Society's Live! division, producing multi-media presentations, performances and film screenings for the general public, school audiences and sponsoring organizations throughout North America. Subjects include exploration, scientific discovery, photography and adventure. It travels the country, sometimes with National Geographic explorers, scientists and photographers. The map is currently on a national tour, visiting several states and hosting thousands of students.
