Mitzvah Project Coming to St. Norbert College
St. Norbert College will present Roger Grunwald and his Mitzvah Project on Monday, March 27, at 7 p.m. in Dudley Birder Hall on the college campus. The event is free and open to the public and will last approximately an hour and a half. It is appropriate for audiences 14 years of age and older.
The 25-minute one act, one-person drama "The Mitzvah", performed by Grunwald, tells the story of a German half-Jew who became a decorated officer in Hitler's army. It is followed by a 27-minute lecture and a 30-minute audience discussion. The project examines how prejudice deforms human beings and how history and culture come into play. In addition, the lecture examines the historical conditions that produced two centuries of German-Jewish striving, intermarriage and conversion, which, in turn, produced over a hundred thousand "mischlinge" ("mixed blood") soldiers. Grunwald, actor and child of a survivor, conceived and co-wrote "The Mitzvah." The play is co-written and directed by Broadway veteran Annie McGreevey.
Grunwald is a graduate of the University of California Berkeley and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. He has been a professional performing artist for over 40 years and is currently on the Speakers Bureau of the Jewish Federation.
