SNC Day: Jump Around! Double Dutch Delight Day/ "Whose Turn in the Ropes?"

Presenters: 

DOUBLE DUTCH TO DREAMS is a community anti-violence initiative through “Together We Will Stop the Violence.” The Milwaukee group encourages kids to cooperate and get moving in their community. Founded by Ebony Haynes, board member at “Young & Established” professionals group and Program Coordinator at Milwaukee Boys and Girls Clubs.

DR. KYRA GAUNT is award-winning performer and author of The Games Black Girls Play: Learning the Ropes from Double-Dutch to Hip-Hop. She serves as a TED Talk Fellow,  and teaches in anthropology and sociology at Baruch College, City University New York.

DJ AFREKETE is also known as Dr. Amy Ongiri, Director & Associate Professor of Film Studies at Lawrence University in Appleton. Dr. Ongiri works vinyl and mixes to reinvigorate older music, combining modern beats like house, calypso, hip hop, and dance music, centering music and voices of color.

Hop over to the St. Norbert College Cassandra Voss Center as the “Double Dutch to Dreams” team from Milwaukee teaches us the ropes: how to double dutch, sing songs, learn tricks. At 11:15am Dr. Kyra Gaunt, author and performer, leads a family-friendly discussion, “Whose turn in the Ropes?” on the history of double dutch among kids and its influence on popular music, considering how race and gender influence the game and the sport. Giveaways and demos on the hour all day, featuring special guest DJ Afrekete. #jumpCVC
