Mathematics

The intersection of art and science

Mathematicians observe and classify patterns of numbers and equations. But as a mathematician, you can also be a creator, crafting beautiful theorems and elegant proofs. In St. Norbert College’s mathematics program, you can combine logic and creativity to solve real-world scientific, business and societal problems.

Students of mathematics work in the fascinating world of real and complex numbers, infinite dimensions and probability. There, you’ll strengthen your analytic skills, learning to break down complex problems into a series of methodical steps that lead to a logical conclusion.

Academic paths within the mathematics major

SNC offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics, with the option to focus your studies by choosing a concentration in theoretical math, applied math or actuarial math.

Maybe you really like math, but love another subject more? No problem! A minor in mathematics will help deepen your analytic ability — a skill that’s valuable in every field.

Students interested in becoming educators choose our program in mathematics teaching for secondary education, which means they gain a solid foundation in math while preparing to earn a high school teaching certificate.

Elevate your mathematics education

If you’re eager to dig into math research, SNC could be just the place for you! We offer opportunities to do summer research alongside a faculty member through the Poss-Wroble Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship, and many SNC math majors present their research at the Pi Mu Epsilon Regional Undergraduate Math Conference. SNC isn’t all about scholarly research; we want you to succeed in whatever career you choose, and that can require getting some job experience before you earn your diploma. Our math majors have held intern roles at Acuity, Georgia-Pacific and Northern Star Industries.

Our mathematics club, Sigma Nu Delta, brings math enthusiasts together for social, academic and community-service opportunities. High-achieving mathematics students can also qualify for our chapter of the national mathematics honor society Pi Mu Epsilon.

  • I was a math teaching assistant for Dr. Laubacher my first three years, and the amount of people I met just through being a T.A. and building that community within the math department was significant in making me love the math major.

  • The robust knowledge base a liberal arts education provides allows me to be able to better present my research to the world. It gave me the skills to hold conversations with people unfamiliar with my research and maybe the topic in general.
